Due to the province's extended COVID-19 safety measures, many projects for this year's Intersections festival pivoted to be offered fully online. #DYK "ChinaTOwn: Future Heritage(s) of Toronto's Chinatowns" exhibition was originally supposed to take place at the Cecil Community Centre ?

Located in West Chinatown at 58 Cecil St. the community centre which opened in 1978 has had the mission to "foster a sense of community and enhance the quality of life through the development, encouragement and support of programs and activities responsive to local needs."

The Cecil Community Centre's building has a rich history reflective of the neighbourhood around it. Built in 1890 by architects Knox and Elliott, it was originally a church for the Protestant congregation of the Church of Christ.

As the Chinese population established roots in the area & after the near destruction of the first Chinatown, it became the Chinese Catholic Centre. In the 70s, it became the HQ for one of Toronto's earliest gay rights groups, the Community Homophile Association of Toronto (CHAT).

Finally, in the late 70s, the city acquired the building and it became the Cecil Community Centre. To this day they continue to serve the community through programs for young and old and even hosted a pop-up vaccine clinic!

Today, tomorrow (Friday), and Saturday, Cecil Community Centre is holding a pop-up clinic for people living, working, or studying in M5T. Walk-ins are welcome, no appointment required. Come get your 1st or 2nd dose.
