The « FOREL Greenland 2024 » expedition, initiated by the Forel Heritage Association, is coming to an end. FOREL docked at the port « La Base » in Lorient. The crew can now celebrate the success of this first mission before preparing FOREL for winter refit that lies ahead.

Red alarm 🚨 : the glaciers are melting not only in the two Poles but especially in the high mountains of the world. The project Ice Memory Foundation aims collecting ice cores from 20 endangered glaciers around tho world in 20 years.

Thanks to ice cores, scientists are mapping out how the Earth environment and temperatures vary over millennia. A repository for the ice cores is under preparation near the Italo-French Concordia station in #Antartica: a natural freezer with a temperature around minus 55°Celsius.

For all these years, it was just a name, a hope, a dream. Now the water stable isotope measurements confirmed that we have officially surpassed EPICA Dome C as the oldest continuous ice core record! We are truly Beyond EPICA! Merry Christmas to everyone! 📸F. Scoto©PNRA/IPEV

The drilling passed the depth of 2747 m and the processing is now only a few meters behind. Ice core boxes are being transferred to Mario Zucchelli Station. On January 2nd, the Australian MYIC team visited our camp and had some coffee and a cake (photo). 📸J. Westhoff©PNRA/IPEV

The Beyond EPICA ice core drilling has finally reached the bedrock at a depth of 2800 m: this is a huge success for our project and for ice core science! We have strong indications that 1.2 million years of climate record are stored in the uppermost 2480 m of ice. 📸©PNRA/IPEV
