Day 4 of the West Highland Way Today we left the wooded paths along Loch Lomond into the wide-open Glen Fallon. Also spotted the first wild garnets of the trip.

Day 5 of the West Highland Way A day of walking around the River Fillan, we crossed a boundary from the Southern Highland Group to the structurally lower Argyll Group. Found some nice bits of the Loch Tay Amphibolite and the Ben Lui Schist - much bigger garnets than yesterday!

Day 6 of the West Highland Way A march across the Grampian Auch Gleann Psammites in the rain, which was rewarded with a view of Loch Tulla in the sunshine.

Day 7 of the West Highland Way A walk along the edge of Rannoch Moor. Beneath the grass of this relatively flat-lying area of the Highlands is a granodiorite pluton, some 25 km across. It forced its way up into the overlying Grampian metasediments ~420 million years ago.

Day 8 of the West Highland Way A fleeting view of the Glencoe volcanics, with the dark rhyolite of Buachaille Etive Mòr. Further NW we found many examples of the Etive Dyke Swarm - microdiorite intrusions that exploited the fabric of the host Grampian metasediments.

Day 9 of the West Highland Way A long walk through the secluded Lairig Mor and around the granite of Mullach nan Coirean, before going down to Glen Nevis and Fort William. We had an amazing view of Ben Nevis in the sunshine.

My first ever research paper has been published and is now available online! 🥳 In it we investigated what the humble and beautiful mineral kyanite can tell us about metamorphism and crustal melting processes. 🪨💙🏔️ (1/3) link.springer.com/article/10.100… #TeamKyanite
