Belated congratulations to Chathuri Jayatissa for winning the #SriLanka #MothWeek, with runners up Chathura Udayanga & Sithmina Perera. Nuwan Jayawardana who ran the event is giving each a copy of his fine book on SL moths. Thanks to Vijay Barve for his inspiration & guidance!

Lesser Yellownape from Sri Lanka photographed by Chathuri Jayatissa & now on iNaturalist. Chathuri continues to document the natural history of her own special corner of SL (Batapola, east of Ambalangoda) diligently with great iN observations. inaturalist.org/observations/9β¦

Photos of Psechrus spiders (like this iNaturalist obs by Chathuri Jayatissa ) remind me that the first time I saw a specimen of one of them at the Natural History Museum (with no prior knowledge of Sri Lankaβs spiders) I thought it was a Tegenaria! Ok, so shoot me! π€£ inaturalist.org/observations/6β¦

Dear old William Rae Sherriffs! He wasn't lying when he said "they have, when alive, on the abdomen three brilliant red dots which turn silvery after being kept in spirit." Alive: Chathuri Jayatissa After being kept in spirit: yours truly. Leucauge ditissima sensu Sherriffs, 1919.

I am amazed how well known many insects & other small critters have become in π±π°, thanks to iNaturalist helping record & identify organisms. 40 years ago this grasshopper could only be identified by an expert at a large museum! Pix Chathuri Jayatissa (inaturalist.org/observations/6β¦).

shloop π€ Uroballus carlei is weird. Other species, such as those from Sri Lanka (which include the type species, Uroballus octovittatus) seem more normal, apart from the v long dorsal spinnerets. Hereβs a great iNaturalist observation from π±π° by Chathuri Jayatissa : inaturalist.org/observations/6β¦
