An electric evening of poetry to kick off this year's #CheltenhamPoetryFestival! In 'Mythology, Magic, Archetypes.' Monica Piercy, Lucy Heuschen, Pat Edwards Pat Edwards (Welshpool Poetry Festival 6/7 June) and Ruth Padel treated us to poetry on the power, joy and challenges of womanhood spanning time and myth.

One of the joys of the festival is the chance to showcase new and emerging voices. University of Gloucestershire MA student Monica Piercy treated us to spellbinding poetry weaving together landscape, mythology and femininity. We can't wait to see where her work takes her next.

A regular mic maestro at our online events, Lucy Heuschen introduced us to her most recent collection: Daughter of Fire. A powerful, lyrical exploration of the life of Margaret of Anjou - a woman, leader, mother, queen, truly brought to life with tenderness and passion.

It is always a treat to hear Pat Edwards (Pat Edwards (Welshpool Poetry Festival 6/7 June)) read and last night was no exception! Pat introduced us to a gallery of Marys, all discussed in her wonderful blend of passion, humanity and humour. Pat's final poem, a new piece, left us eagerly awaiting a new release!

The first of two events this evening here at the festival. JLM Morton, Anna Saunders and Michael Symmons Roberts treating us to richly imagist poetry on environment, ecological disaster and... blackbirds!

JLM Morton opened last evening's reading with the declaration that 'The land is dreaming again'. Her poetry is deeply rooted in landscape - in an increasingly digital world, Morton brings the woodland to us, places roots under our feet and branches over our head. What a feast!

Michael Symmons Roberts treated us last night to his playful, inventive poetry laced with music. Roberts wields language like a composer. He has been described as 'a religious poet in a secular age' & the gorgeous setting of St Paul's Church was truly a fitting stage.

Festival founder Anna Saunders gave us a rare treat yesterday evening with a reading of her own work. Anna's work is highly imagistic, deeply mythological yet pressing and immediate, all rendered in punchy language with a painterly eye for striking combinations of language.

An absolute feast of poetry last night at the festival! Marvin Poet 🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇯🇲's witty, searing poetry, a smorgasbord courtesy of Black Eyes Publishing UK and the fiery tour-de-force of Lily Redwood left us moved to laughter, to tears and to a desire for action in so many ways.

This evening quite simply HAD to take place in a church! Such passion and zeal on the poetry of science from Robin Ince, Joseph Conlon, Jason Conway, Derek Healy and a range of terrific students. What an inspiring pair of events propelled by terrific writers & a universe of ideas

Had a very enjoyable night last night at CheltenhamPoetryFest hosting 2 science & poetry themed events which included being in conversation with Joseph Conlon & later Robin Ince. Thank you Anna Saunders for inviting me & to Paula Whitcher for some of the photos.

Last night's first event was absolutely electrifying! Derek Healy gave a wide-ranging and generous reading of science-based poetry, before Joseph Conlon took us through the history of the universe with the passion and zeal of a preacher, all masterfully hosted by Jo Durrant

Today we were treated to a journey courtesy of Robert Seatter. Discussion ranged from minute observations of curious objects to exploration of universality. Robert is a terrific speaker and a skilled poet with a talent for finding the voices in all things - even beds or thrushes!
