#FridayFrocks – #Sleeves: They are a feature of this mauve silk ball gown, c.1817 – 1820. They’re overlaid with diamond-shaped sections, through which the fabric of the sleeve could be pulled. They are finished with twists of padded rouleaux and silk lace. @johnchasephoto

#FridayFrocks – #Sleeves: Gown c.1830. The width was achieved by wearing sleeve puffers beneath. The effect of these sleeves and the wide skirt below was to emphasise a small waist, which was now tightly corseted. @johnchasephoto

#FridayFrocks – Fashion became more sombre in the 1840s. #Sleeves followed suit. They lost the volume of the previous two decades and were cut much closer to the arm, as seen in this day dress of c.1845.
