Earlier today we questioned Professor Dame Ottoline Leyser, Chief Executive of UK Research and Innovation, about how UK Research and Innovation measure and communicate to the public the benefits and outcomes of the scientific research they support.

Given the importance of public confidence in such a tight fiscal environment, I asked the head of UK Research and Innovation in Science, Innovation and Technology Committee to address National Audit Office and Public Accounts Committee concerns that a lack of performance metrics means we don't know what we are getting for ยฃ86 billion of funding.

I recently met with Chief Constable Jardine of Northumbria Police to discuss serious issues raised by my constituents, mainly grooming gangs but also anti-social behaviour and violent crime. Here are theย keyย take-aways:

Celebrating my brilliant friend Chi Onwurah ๐ on being made a Dame! As Chair of the Science, Innovation and Technology Committee and for many years one of the few engineers in Parliament, Dame Onwurrah's science and industrial expertise is a huge asset to the development of the UK's innovation ecosystem.

In Science, Innovation and Technology Committee we heard that women are as successful as men in applying for research grants, but fewer apply. I asked the head of UK Research and Innovation if there is a significant overlap in the skills it takes to apply for grant funding successfully and being a successful researcher.

The Royal Society of Biology Parliamentary #LinksDay is an institution, welcoming Learned Societies into Westminster to celebrate science and evidence based policy. As Chair of Science, Innovation and Technology Committee, great to host the event.

Next winter an extra 2.7 million households will get ยฃ150 off their energy bills. Weโre expanding the Warm Home Discount to provide families with vital cost of living support. Delivering energy security and putting more money back in peopleโs pockets. mirror.co.uk/news/politics/โฆ

In Science, Innovation and Technology Committee I put to the head of UK Research and Innovation the need for quantitative/qualitative reporting on curiosity-driven, applied and commercial research to see what public investment is producing. She said from a bureaucracy point of view, people do not want to report regularly.

In today's The Times and The Sunday Times, and ahead of #INWED25 (International Women in Engineering Day ๐๏ธ 23 June), our CEO Dr HilaryLeevers talks about the huge gender gap in the workforce, and the appetite for change. thetimes.com/article/d56bf1โฆ
