did I plan my lab meeting slot around Halloween? no. but did i wear my HMM costume b/c i was presenting HMM data? hell yes! p.s. if you want to know more about the HMM "flavors" you see previewed here check out my #SfN2022 poster on Sat Nov 12th from 1-5pm (poster # 080.09)

Peer review can serve a constructive, formative function when done well — but the peer review system as it is can produce biased and unfair outcomes. How can we improve it? Excited to share a review & opinion piece we have been working on Reviewer Zero 👇🏽

New preprint w/ Kevin Ochsner: Matt Sachs Matt worked with film score composers to create emotional music, and found brain regions that: -track emotional dynamics -represent emotional information -are sensitive to the recent emotional context! biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

My first-ish foray into episodic memory, thanks to Jiawen Huang Chris Baldassano and Isabel Velarde Columbia DPM Lab. We study the effect of learning a game-play schema not on the recall of static board positions, but of game-relevant move sequences. elifesciences.org/articles/82599

The final version of this work is now published at eLife! The Editor's evaluation gives a great summary of why we are so excited about this new kind of paradigm for studying sequential memory elifesciences.org/articles/82599

All NeuroImage and NeuroImage:Reports editors have resigned over the high publication fee, and are starting a new non-profit journal imaging-neuroscience.org This comes with great regret, and a huge amount of thought and discussion- please read announcement to get more details.

I'm so excited to share this work with Mariam Aly and Chris Baldassano! We explore how memory for temporal structure changes with consolidation to support multistep anticipation. Make sure to read to the end for some fun RT modeling! ✨️ psyarxiv.com/x2f7s

When two people act similarly we call them “in-sync” — could this figure of speech be literally true? Do more similar individuals show greater neural synchrony? Check out our answer: bit.ly/3CQnVed Monica Rosenberg @AnnaCorriveau Hayoung Song YoungHye Judy Kwon Kwangsun (Ray) Yoo

Hannah's biggest paper from her PhD is preprinted! She created a new paradigm for learning complex sequences of locations (using VR), and then showed that cuing a location activated brain representations of nearby locations, with different temporal scales in different regions!

One of the lab's original Day 1 "dream" projects is now out as a preprint! Using a custom set of stories with fMRI, we showed that top-down attention can shift mPFC event boundaries to align with different kinds of narrative boundaries biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
