Following retirement and the expansion of 3 hobbies: Homebrewing, birding and photography, I hope to post a few bird pics here if sober.

In principle I think we should let kids have fun, but Finsbury Park festival season gets bigger and badder every year. I think it's time to stop it. It's a common problem in London that parks within a single borough are treated better than parks at a boundary of multiple boroughs

A fruitful morning at King George V Reservoir, Chingford saw me get to 100 species for the year there. Adult & juvenile Black-necked Grebe were the highlight. Barnacle Goose also new. #londonbirds

With well over 2000 visits to Woodberry Wetlands logged on @Birdtrack, site ticks are now few and far between. This female Pintail today was my 132nd species for the site, the first new once since Cattle Egret 3 years ago. #LondonBirds

It's not all doom and gloom in the Butterfly world. Brown Hairstreak are spreading across London and I saw my first in Allens Gardens, Hackney on 27/8. Now it seems that Wall are making a comeback in London, 4 seen RSPB Rainham Marshes today including this one (on decking near toilets).

The @E17Wetlands Black-necked Grebe has now relocated to Lockwood Reservoir, a public part of the reserve, where is has been showing well along the east bank. Damp Wheatear shows what the weather was like this morning. #londonbirds

I once thought that Mastodon might be the successor to Musk-era Twitter/X. Then I thought it might be Threads. Now maybe Bluesky Social is the front runner? Anyway, this is my new account:

I was on the 279 bus home from KGV Res. (close views of Great Northern Diver in murky light) when news came through of 3 Whooper Swans on no.5 Res. @E17Wetlands. I jumped off and got on the 123, still on a hopper fare (thanks Sadiq Khan) and was soon +1 for the London list.

Why do patch birders bother? Today I went out in the dark on a wet & windy day. Didn't see much, but 10 miles in, heard the familiar call of a Great Northern Diver. The next hour was mostly panic but eventually I got good views and so did the regulars. @E17wetlands #londonbirds

Early migrants seem thin on the ground this year. After two Sand Martins on Lockwood Reservoir at Walthamstow on March 10th, this drake Garganey was at King George V Reservoir on the 13th. Some of the supporting cast were more photogenic (M Smew & Black Redstarts) #londonbirds

Bar-tailed Godwits are fairly scarce away from the coast in the winter in the UK. This bird in spectacular transitional plumage was on Lockwood reservoir at Walthamstow Wetlands first thing this morning (March 17th). We also had one last winter, on Feb 7th. #londonbirds

As a long-time watcher of a small London patch, Woodberry Wetlands, it was a dream come true to have a pair of Avocets turn up this morning and spend half an hour feeding amongst the gulls. They were later seen up the road at Walthamstow Wetlands. #londonbirds David Mooney
