Yesterday Atletic Bilbao footballer Óscar de Marcos retired after 435 matches for Basque team. He spent years dedicating one day a week to visiting terminally ill patients. When the press reported on it, he said: "Everything I've done has lost value once it became public." Star!

American nurse Salaria Kea was rejected as a flood relief volunteer in the US MidWest in 1936 because she was black. Not an issue in Republican Spain. Here she is working at Villa Paz. IB Hospital, Saelices SE of Madrid, where she was head nurse over 5 white American nurs

I've no intention of visiting Trump's America but, after hearing Rubio's announcement, does the fact that I've tweeted a handful of times about him mean I wouldn't even be allowed to?

Oslo, 1937. Demonstration demanding "more effective aid for Spain". Smaller banner to left is calling for boycott of fish sales/trade to Franco's Spain. I have a Norwegian herring tin found in Republican trench on Ebro front, just possibly from food aid from Norway trade unions

A "carlanca", collar worn by mastiff sheepdogs as protection against wolves, midC20th. I got this in village in Sierra de la Culebra, Zamora a few years ago, home to poss highest density of wolves in Europe. Modified ones still used today. I wonder if OldEnglish had word for this

"Without American petroleum and American trucks and American credit, we could never have won the civil war.” José María Doussinague, under-secretary, Foreign ministry of Franco regime, 1945. Quoted in Anthony Beevor's Battle for Spain

'Many Spaniards...believe that we gained our victory exclusively through German+ Italian aid; I am convinced that, though this did contribute, the fundamental reason for our winning the war, was the English position opposing intervention in Spain.' Franco Minister, Pedro de Sáinz

Archeology of monopolistic capitalism a couple of years ago on the Galician coast. I really don't miss these exploitative, overpriced, malfunctioning shit-cabins.

"From Merseyside to the Ebro" Thanks to Tony for sending me these images of local International Brigaders on permanent display at the The CASA, the famed centre set up by sacked dockers. "From the banks of the Mersey some 200 left to join the struggle... 30 never returned"

Plaque on a boulder in Toronto to the ~1600 Canadians, the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion, who fought against fascism in Spain. The limestone boulder was donated by the town of Gandesa which saw bitter fighting during the Ebro Battle. Many thanks to Unifor Local 40 for sending.

Stunning Iberian sculpture of a wolf head from El Pajarillo, Jaén, Andalucía, early 4th BCE. The ears pinned back and wrinkled muzzle suggest a threatening posture. It forms part of large sculpture telling story of hero who frees a youth from the wild animal. Museo de Jaén

Flyer advertising a series of talks at libraries in Barcelona on censorship, vandalized today at Biblioteca de Poble-sec, another example of the rising fascist tide. This will now be kept for a possible future exhibit.
