Spent yesterday doing hourly fuel samples of heather and Gorse with Prof. Claire M Belcher for Research at Exeter and Toward a UK Fire Danger Rating System. Weather, fuel moisture content, ignitability and flammability all recorded on the hour from 09:00 until 18:00. Michael Rob Gazzard

Today we have been looking at forestry Litter and Duff fuel moisture content, ignitability and flammability. Forestry Commission colleagues collected samples from Scotland and England along with the local weather data for us to test. Hard to believe what we are seeing in the UK todays in terms of #wildfire first extensive losses of homes and infrastructure. Multiple fires. Wildfires are a real threat in the UK now - Toward a UK Fire Danger Rating System #ukwildfire

Here's the wildfire chapter from the UK's Climate Change Risk Assessment, led by Prof. Claire M Belcher: ukclimaterisk.org/wp-content/uplโฆ

Max. fire weather index for England during the July heatwave was way above anything we have seen in the last two decades. No wonder fire services were so stretched and we had an unprecedented property loss linked to vegetation fires. ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis by T. Nikonovas Toward a UK Fire Danger Rating System

Agricultural land provides the largest area of vegetation fire fuels in England - unlike other UK countries. Probably the easiest fuel to manage in the UK. Analysis by T. Nikonovas Toward a UK Fire Danger Rating System based on two decades of satellite data.

The Toward a UK Fire Danger Rating System project placing the recent fire weather in a historical context in the New Scientist and providing the on the ground measurements necessary to improve these indices for the future challenges we face.

It was a pleasure to take part in BBC Countryfile today. The summer drought special highlighted the plight of farmers, wildlife and wildfires during drought conditions. We will have to learn to adapt to climate change. Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service Research at Exeter Rayanne Vitali Toward a UK Fire Danger Rating System

Through this exciting project Prof. Claire M Belcher, #CindyLooy, and I are coupling palaeo and modern proxies to explore the complex interaction of climate and fire with the potential fire-adaptive trait of active branch shedding in ancient conifers (cladoptosis).

The Toward a UK Fire Danger Rating System team had a great few days at the Wildfire22 conference. Thanks to all those involved in organising and presenting - see you in 2024! ukwildfireconference2022.org

Just to say the wildfire lab Research at Exeter really enjoyed playing #FireTower last night - all your wildfire types will love this game !

Sampling tins, masking tape, cutters, black pen, what3words app and tape measure โ All ready for heather sampling tomorrow as part of #TheGreatFuelMoistureSurvey. Excited to be part of this national survey for monitoring heather moisture Toward a UK Fire Danger Rating System @EPRGManchester Nick Kettridge

Listen to Kerryn Little explain the importance of #TheGreatFuelMoistureSurvey taking place this week. Her work supported by Toward a UK Fire Danger Rating System and PyroLife_ITN.

Wonderful to have Prof. Claire M Belcher from University of Exeter talking about plants...understanding flammability, past, present and into the future #wildfires #leverhulmewildfires2023

Quote of the conference so far from Prof. Claire M Belcher: โplants are amazing. Donโt rule out their power in driving landscape flammabilityโ Yes Claire! ๐ #leverhulmewildfires2023
