Some medieval calendars for July, with people hard at work mowing grass in the meadows. One old English name for July was 'Mead-month', the month of the hay harvest. (British Library, Lansdowne MS. 383; Bodleian Library, MS. Rawl. liturg. e. 14, Douce 49, and Add. A. 46)

Very sad to see River & Rowing Museum closing in September. Do go and visit the collections before they are dispersed, enjoy the café, take children to the Wind in the Willows while you can. OxTweets

Happy feast of the translation of St Thomas of Canterbury! Here are some relevant pilgrimage badges. It is amazing to me to think that each of these represents a visit to the shrine at Canterbury — an individual's prayers — crucial moments in some now-forgotten life.

The C12th carvings of the apostles in the porch at Malmesbury Abbey are achingly beautiful with their Byzantine-esque swirling swags that feel like the ripples in a pond. They remind us that there are different ways of seeing - a kind of visual literacy.

Kind Edgar took an important part in the re-establishment and building of the abbey in c970, on the site of what is now Peterborough Cathedral. It was a Benedictine abbey. The previous abbey had been destroyed by Vikings c870.
