A picture of Samuel Springer MBE , Hackney's first black Mayor, hangs proudly in the Town Hall. On Friday we lowered the flag to half mast and stood in silent respect as the funeral cortege stopped at the Town Hall steps. A man of courage who paved the way all those years ago.

Samuel Springer MBE was our first black Mayor serving the borough in the early 1980's. A community champion and campaigner. He was my first Mayor when I came to Hackney. It was my privilege to represent the borough and pay our respects at his funeral. We celebrate his legacy .
