The latest alpha version of CloudCompare (2.14.alpha, released this day) has a proper 'turntable' rotation mode! The old 'Display > Lock rotation about an axis' method has been revamped, and now has a dedicated shortcut in the 'View' toolbar. Also, this setting is persistent.
