The game lost a real one today. RIP Mike Law. Didn't matter where I was coaching or what my title was - Mike Law treated me (and everyone) like royalty every time I saw him. You always walked away from Mike feeling better about life.

Why not offer both? We make decisions based on value calculations. What choice provides the most value? Meaning heavily reweighs the equation— But our brains still bias immediacy (temporal discounting). The key to retention is tipping the value scale in your favor.

It’s not culture vs. strategy. Culture is strategy. When athletes feel disconnected from their purpose, role, or leadership, they spend their mental energy trying to belong—and have less to give to performance. Culture isn’t separate from strategy—it drives it.

Challenge doesn’t drive athletes away—but a lack of support might. High standards signal belief. Avoiding them signals fragility. Don’t lower the bar to keep them. Raise your support to help them reach it.

I’ve given three presentations to different groups of coaches in the past two weeks. In each one, I asked: “What makes a great coach?” Not one said tactics, drill catalogues, or X’s and O’s. They talked coaches ability to lead themselves, lead others & the impact it has on

Telling athletes “Don’t think about that mistake” feels helpful—but it often backfires. Ironic processing theory tells us: the more we try not to think about something, the more attention it gets. Instead of avoiding thoughts, give athletes a target. Focus on what's next.
