Utah Jazz head coach Will Hardy was asked, β€œWhat is the best investment you’ve made in your career as a coach?” His answer: Working with a mental performance coach. I am curious, what’s been the best investment you’ve made in yourself as a coach? Via: Slappin' Glass

The game lost a real one today. RIP Mike Law. Didn't matter where I was coaching or what my title was - Mike Law treated me (and everyone) like royalty every time I saw him. You always walked away from Mike feeling better about life.

Mike Law was at everything hoops related, it seemed. He always took time to say hello and give undivided attention. Without fail, he’d be wearing a ball cap, sweatsuit, fresh kicks β€” and his trademark smile. I JUST saw him at CIF finals. Life is but a vapor. RIP Mike Law πŸ•ŠοΈ

As a coach, you're constantly making tough decisions. When you have clarity on your who you are & where you're going, it's easier to: – Make decisions in difficult situations – Justify those decisions – Stick to your decisions – Build trust with athletes, staff, & stakeholders

There are no good or bad thoughts during performanceβ€”just thoughts. Trying to chase the β€œright” mindset only adds pressure and distraction. Performance doesn’t require "perfect" thoughtsβ€” It requires awareness, openness, and the ability to choose your response.

Why not offer both? We make decisions based on value calculations. What choice provides the most value? Meaning heavily reweighs the equationβ€” But our brains still bias immediacy (temporal discounting). The key to retention is tipping the value scale in your favor.

It’s not culture vs. strategy. Culture is strategy. When athletes feel disconnected from their purpose, role, or leadership, they spend their mental energy trying to belongβ€”and have less to give to performance. Culture isn’t separate from strategyβ€”it drives it.

Challenge doesn’t drive athletes awayβ€”but a lack of support might. High standards signal belief. Avoiding them signals fragility. Don’t lower the bar to keep them. Raise your support to help them reach it.

I’ve given three presentations to different groups of coaches in the past two weeks. In each one, I asked: β€œWhat makes a great coach?” Not one said tactics, drill catalogues, or X’s and O’s. They talked coaches ability to lead themselves, lead others & the impact it has on

Brian Sullivan (@briansullivansp) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Telling athletes β€œDon’t think about that mistake” feels helpfulβ€”but it often backfires. Ironic processing theory tells us: the more we try not to think about something, the more attention it gets. Instead of avoiding thoughts, give athletes a target. Focus on what's next.
