Black History is American History. Throughout the month, we’ll be highlighting Black History at Colby College and in the United States. #BlackHistoryMonth

1845: Jonas Holland Townsend is the first African-American to attend Colby College. Townsend heads west for the California gold rush in 1849 and cofounds the first black newspaper in California, the Mirror of the Times, in 1855 and serves as the head editor from 1856-1858.

1865: Samuel Osborne arrives in Waterville, Maine after being freed from slavery. Two years later, Sam was hired as Colby College’s lone janitor and served in the position for 37 years. A beloved member of the college community, he played a role in everyone's lives.

When Sam died on July 1st, 1904, the campus celebrated his life by ringing the college bell 71 times, his age at the time of death. In 2017, Colby College President David Greene changed the name of the President's House to the Osborne House in honor of Sam. #BlackHistoryMonth

1887: Adam Simpson Green becomes the first African-American to graduate from Colby College. Never afraid to express his opinion, Green often wrote articles for the Colby Echo News about that state of the nation after the Civil War. Green became a teacher. #BlackHistoryMonth

1900: Marion Osborne, daughter of beloved Colby College janitor Sam Osborne, became the first African-American woman to graduate from Colby College. After moving to NY for some time, she returned to Waterville for the remainder of her life. #BlackHistoryMonth
