Welcome new followers! Will be sharing the stories of colonial veterans here as our research develops. For now, here's a picture of an Algerian veteran and his family from 1914 from the Archives nationales d'outre-mer.

Pedro Albizu Campos signed up to serve in 🇺🇸 Infantry at the outbreak of WWI. He helped organise homeguard in Ponce before being assigned to the all-black 375th infantry. War ended before they could be sent to Europe. He went on to be a leading figure in Puerto Rican nationalism.

Off to Leeds tomorrow for the @HistoryWelfare conference. This will be the first official outing for COLVET. I look forward to talking about how our vision of 🇫🇷 veteran provision is transformed when we look through the prism of empire. Will explore the case of Abdoulaye N'Diaye.

The Centre for Rehabilitation and Training of the War-Wounded in Kouba, Algeria. This centre mixed Algerian and settler veterans and is a fascinating, if underexplored, locus where 🇫🇷 veteran policies encountered and grappled with the grammars of difference essential to empire.

It has been fascinating delving into the history of Indian veterans of the First World War. There's such a rich historiography produced by great scholars- will be interesting to put into dialogue with other imperial contexts.
