🧵 Quinn Priester quietly made one of the best LHH pitch-mix adjustments in MLB this season. 💻 I built my first R-based Shiny App to break it down. From 6.02 FIP ➡️ 1.06 FIP vs LHH in 60 days. Here’s what happened 👇🏼 #PitchDesign #MLBDev #RStats #BrewCrew

Priester debuted with Pittsburgh in 2023. After a brief stop in Boston, he was dealt to Milwaukee in April '25. Through May, he was struggling: •4.98 FIP •6.2% K-BB rate The Brewers' dev staff stepped in. And in June, the transformation began. Let’s dive in.👇🏼

The main issue? Left-handed hitters were torching him: 📆 May 1–31 vs LHH •6.02 FIP •3.4% K-BB •45.8% Sinker usage •13.6% Cutter usage •20.3% CB •16.5% SL

Then came the adjustment. 📆 June 1–July 31 vs LHH •1.06 FIP •28.7% K-BB •SK ⬇️ to 38% •CT ⬆️ to 25% Priester trusted his motor preferences and bought in on the Cutter, and it changed everything.

Why the Cutter? Priester is a natural supinator. He cuts his 4-seam fastball unintentionally. The pitch grades poorly on Fangraphs Stuff+ at 78. So instead of fighting that, he leaned into it. The Brewers helped him turn a flaw into a weapon.

The shift in pitch usage let him: ✅ Attack LHH more effectively ✅ Set up his best breaking stuff ✅ Reduce overreliance on the Sinker This is what modern pitch design looks like. Not just holding an iPad and tagging pitches while mic’d up.

📊 Overall Results: Before (May 1–31): •4.98 FIP •6.2% K-BB After (June–July): •2.95 FIP •21.1% K-BB vs LHH Before •6.02 FIP •3.4% K-BB vs LHH After: •1.06 FIP •28.7% K-BB The Brewers helped him unlock his arsenal. I tracked it all using custom R tools I built

Here’s a sneak peek of the visual tools I’m building in R using ggplot2, dplyr, and Shiny. 📈 Pitch usage tables 🎯 Strike zones 🧲 Movement profiles 🌡️ Heat maps 💻 Velocity charts Can’t wait to post more of these soon and incorporate this into our program at Combine Academy Baseball!

This is just the beginning. Huge thanks to Collin Murray for teaching me R & guiding me through how to apply it in baseball. 🔍 Looking to grow, contribute, and keep learning. ✉️ My DMs are open!

1/ Meet Jackson Burke, a 9 y/o on Combine Academy Baseball’s newest 10u travel team. Big frame. #PlayerDev #YouthBaseball 🧵 A thread on skill transfer & movement training 👇🏼

2/ 🎯 Rotation Patterns + Glove Side Awareness We’re using a Half-Kneeling MB Throw to isolate rotation and clean up posture. 🔵 Added a blue plyo on his glove side to cue connection — a constraint that builds awareness without over-coaching. #MotorLearning #ConstraintsLed

3/ 🔥 “The Joe Burrow” Drill Named after his favorite QB. He gets rhythm, fluidity, and athleticism — things big kids often struggle to find. His challenge: staying stuck on the backside. ✅ Letting him “walk it off” post-throw encourages a front-side finish & natural

4/ 💥 Rapid Fire Throws — AA + Tempo Short, quick, athletic throws. • Forces fast arm cycles • Builds sequencing • Trains his body to move quick This directly supports the movement demands of throwing at game speed. #ArmAction #YouthDevelopment

5/ 🛠️ Plyo Work - Transferring to the Slope We took our plyo drills to the mound to get slope feel pre-pen. Jackson nearly hit a PR (54.9 mph). It’s about blending drill work into environments that feel game-like. #SkillTransfer #ThrowingDevelopment

6/ 💡 Coaching Nugget Be very careful with verbal cues. Internal thinking slows movement. 🟦 External cues/constraints (blue plyo) or movement goals (“walk it off”) allow athletes to solve problems on their own. Internal cues/thoughts can slow the athlete down. Let the constraint

7/ At 9 years old, Jackson doesn’t need to be “perfect.” He needs to move well, build awareness, and adapt. This is what skill transfer looks like in youth dev; constraints, rhythm, and freedom to explore. #PlayerDevelopment #BaseballTwitter #MotorLearning
