26 years ago today, the Soviet-German composer Alfred Schnittke died in Hamburg at 63. His gravestone (image) is inscribed with a fermata (a sign to hold a note or rest an indeterminate length) over a whole rest, with a dynamic (volume) indication of triple-forte.
