The entire point of the loud music is to dare people to make an imposition or polite request that can be met with violence, and the guys doing it are getting off on intimidating the people around them. It’s a humiliation ritual. This is obvious.

I was very excited to discover sour plums at my local Middle Eastern supermarket, as I didn’t know you could get them outside Japan. So, I impulsively bought everything necessary to make umeshu (or Japanese plum wine). These should be ready for drinking in a year’s time. Kampai!

I’m at a conference on Nietzsche in Sils-Maria, so we got to see the house he lived in and the rock where he had his vision of the eternal recurrence of the same. I suddenly also understand much better why Nietzsche’s Zarathustra contains so many allusions to ‘going down’!

Sipping a cocktail in a Milanese restaurant whilst eating fried courgette flowers stuffed with ricotta, lemon, and anchovies. Heaven!

Continuing my journey in Nietzsche’s footsteps with the building where he lived in Turin until he saw a horse being beaten in the nearby piazza, suffered a mental breakdown, and lost his mind for good.
