Fifty years ago, Saigon fell and the Vietnam war ended. America's chaotic evacuation raised big doubts about its credibility, The Economist wrote at the time. Sound familiar? My piece this week economist.com/interactive/as…

"Abeam" CSB-8022 (ex-USCGC "Mellon") of Vietnam Coast Guard (VCG) cruising in the vicinity of Yukon Harbor (Kitsap, Washington). Like other Hamiltons, CSB-8022 lost the rear Phalanx before the transfer. It's still heavily armed compared to other Asian Coast Guard vessels.

Two years ago, I heard that Taiwan's govt had unearthed surveillance files from the secret police of its authoritarian era. They were finally becoming open to the public, nearly four decades after Taiwan's democratisation. I wanted to see what was inside: economist.com/1843/2025/05/0…

A story from the northeastern side of the Sino-Vietnamese borderlands over 100 years ago. I wonder if Trump can comprehend this history. From Sister Qingfei Yin's new book: "State Building in Cold War Asia: Comrades and Competitors on the Sino-Vietnamese Border". Cambridge University Press - History

New from Katie Bryant on The Economist’s visual investigations team: In the past two months the junta has launched more airstrikes, including on civilians, than it did prior to declaring a ceasefire in the days following the March 28th earthquake. youtube.com/shorts/kJw_s9k…

Vladimir Putin wants total victory in Ukraine, not just a ceasefire. The legitimacy of Russian rulers depends on military triumph, and war has become the organising principle of Mr Putin’s Russia. Arkady Ostrovsky, our Russia editor, explains why econ.st/43IQE2K

Fifty years ago, tens of thousands fled Vietnam as the war ended. In the years since many have returned. Now their children are coming back, too. For The Economist I wrote about how these returnees are shaping Vietnam’s development economist.com/asia/2025/05/2…

Not a shift in Indonesia’s position, which is still predicated on the realization of a two-state solution. But Prabowo met Israeli officials when he was defence minister, and tends to take an amoral or pragmatic approach to foreign affairs. So I wouldn’t rule it out, either.

Whenever China would say hot-headed things at Shangri-La in the past, things that didn’t make sense to say to Southeast Asia, we used to figure that their first audience was really back in their own capital. Guess that’s true for America now, too. #SLD25

First way that Hegseth says that the U.S. is improving deterrence by denial is deploying NMESIS in the Batanes. See our report on NMESIS in this week’s paper below. #SLD25

Ukraine’s astonishing raid deep inside Russia rewrote the rules of war. It also enraged Putin — and that will have consequences. Today’s piece with Shashank Joshi. economist.com/europe/2025/06…
