Today we worked on acceleration prior to a big block of conditioning. Instant feedback is great tool and our VALD Performance timing gates are awesome. But… we don’t use the initial splits EVER with any timing gate. When it comes to early acceleration, video doesn’t lie!

I take a stab at weighing the arguments for why runners seem so fast these days: shoes, pacing, pandemic training, Norwegian thresholds, etc. I also crunch some data to see if runners really are notably faster - and the jump is smaller than I expected. outsideonline.com/health/trainin…

📢NEW PAPER! Where Mostly here now: @davidthewid.bsky.social, Sarah Myers West & I unpack what Open Source AI even is. We find that the terms ‘open’ & ‘open source’ are often more marketing than technical descriptor, and that even the most 'open' systems don't alone democratize AI 1/ papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…

"89% of international U17/U18 athletes never reach that level as seniors, and 83% of international-class seniors weren't U17/U18 internationals" A good reminder that athletes whose talent seemingly emerges in their 20s are the rule, not the exception. outsideonline.com/health/trainin…

Great analysis of Assefa's Berlin marathon record by Jonathan Gault. Including possible explanations. I make it a 2.75% improvement on her previous best time and a 1.63% improvement on the previous WR. letsrun.com/news/2023/09/t…

This is the first of what we hope might be more Target Articles in Journal of Applied Biomechanics proposing new theoretical frameworks in a research area. Feel free to reach out if you have been rethinking how to address big questions in your movement biomechanics area.

Mark Connick and Glen Lichtwark propose a framework that running economy changes with footwear due to a direct effect of footwear properties and a mediating effect of footwear on ankle and foot biomechanics and the spring-mass system. Read more here: doi.org/10.1123/jab.20…
