This is William of Wermington memorial stone. William was Master of the Works in the 13th C. The effigy holds a ⊺ square & a set of compasses. The stone also carries the mark of the Lodge, a cross with four nail ends. The same marks may be found on the west front.

The small incised stone is possibly the lid of a Crusaders heart casket. It is 11th century and the oldest dated stone inside the Abbey. Some people believe it is a grave marker.

The sarcophagus lid was brought into the church in 1886 in order to preserve it. It is Alwalton marble, contains big oyster shells and is very rare. It is dated to circa 1150 and was for a very important person. There is only one other like it known.

Our clock used to be wound by weights and the iron railings were erected to stop the public being harmed in the event of the weights falling. The weights are no longer needed as the clock now runs by electricity. The clock is a ‘Victorian Bird Cage’.

At the apex of the roof of the current nave is a carved figure of a man looking down at the nave as if protecting it. He is holding a Mitre which was the formal headdress for ‘Mitred’ Abbots (and Bishops) and is wearing vestments. A Mitred Abbot held a seat in the House of Lords.

"Within about sixty miles of where I live in Oxford stand a whole series of beautiful, evocative church buildings, now in the loving care of Friends of Friendless Churches, whose stones and corbels have heard the echo of perhaps a thousand Christmases. What did they hear?"

Our founder, Ivor Bulmer Thomas, photographed churches all over this island from the 1950s through to the 1980s. Some of them document the final services in a church, some remember old churchwardens, some chart their dereliction, others record their restoration. 1/3

Eels were the riches of the Lincolnshire fens! Cambridge Archaeological Unit have found a Roman eel spear in the Deepings. Spalding was granted 2,000 eels per year in 1093 to help feed its monks. Crowland Abbey even tried to bribe Thomas Cromwell with eels to stop the abbey being dissolved!

Which former Fenland Monastery in the Hereward legend is this? Now just the gatehouse. It is one of the questions in a children's competition. The winning entry can win £100 for their school class as part of the Hereward Trail - Five Monasteries Tour. More herewardthewake.co.uk/herewardtrail
