The IUCN Red List has been updated, the number of species at risk has exceeded 40,000 for the first time, but thanks to all the expert IUCN Species Survival Commission volunteers working every day #ForNature we are on the right track to reduce this number. ow.ly/5uha50H771s

Pachypodium es un género de árboles y arbustos suculentos nativos de Madagascar y otras partes de África. A nivel internacional, el género está protegido por la Convención sobre el Comercio Internacional de Especies Amenazadas de Flora y Fauna (CITES).

Características morfológicas muy particulares de Pachypodium: 1) tronco paquicálido, 2) espinescencia, 3) savia.

Pachypodium is a genus of succulent trees and shrubs native to Madagascar and other parts of Africa. Internationally, it is protected by CITES. This means that to be imported and exported between nations, special permits are required.

Following the seizure of >1,000 rare Chilean cacti from a greenhouse in Italy, the plants will have their day in court. Alleged poachers face not only criminal prosecution, but also a civil case brought by an Italian conservation group that is setting important precedents.

Alongside IUCN Cactus IUCN Cactus and Succulent Plants Specialist Group Specialist Group, and pro bono lawyers from DLA Piper Italy we are supporting Italy’s Associazione per la Biodiversità e la sua Conservazione (ABC), to speak for the cacti in court. iucn.org/news/species-s…

ABC’s case claims harm to its conservation mission. If successful, the defendants would have to compensate ABC – funds that will be invested into cactus conservation. This shifts our focus from not only on punishing environmental crimes but also seeking remedies.
