I first came across photos of minstrelsy in some of DePaul’s archives when researching for a different story for 14 East Magazine. Blackface in college yearbooks is a disappointing but not surprising phenomenon, but this was different.

Many of the Vincentians were trained at St. Mary’s of the Barrens, which also was built using the labor of people that they, namely, Bishop Joseph Rosati, enslaved. In 2021, DePaul dropped Rosati’s name off two spaces on campus.
