Tonight’s course will introduce ‘The Mighty’ Poales - here’s the material that’s been collected together in readiness for this foray into the order with CUBG_curators & myself

Waving goodbye to the Monocots, it’s time to welcome in the Eudicots this evening with CUBG_curators and myself. Brace yourself for Ranunculales and Proteales!

2 Passiflora spp. - 2 pollination syndromes - P. contracta (left) only the 2nd time this 🦇 pollinated sp. has flowered Cam Botanic Garden check out it’s funky androgynophore (stalk with stamens and stigma) like a head massager & P. telesiphe (right) trad. 🐝 poll. sp. just as 😎

Perfectly small! Nymphaea thermarum has produced its first flower of the year Cam Botanic Garden - a tiny water lily species endemic to #Rwanda 🇷🇼- unfortunately its extinct in the wild - these little plants offer hope for the future thanks to KewGardens & Bonn Botanic Gardens

All of the Richtersveld material collected as part of the KewGardens Cam Botanic Garden with SANParks has been mounted by CUBG_curators - it looks amazing and leaves a lasting legacy from the trip! The living material is also thriving both here & with Paul Rees

😢today to be saying farewell to our wonderful Glasshouse Supervisor Alex @CamPlantsman after almost 10 years of being here. He has nurtured our collection, contributed so much to research & shared so much knowledge. 🏴 Gardd Cymru 🌿 Garden of Wales are lucky to have him & we wish him all the best!

Tackling titans... 🏴 Gardd Cymru 🌿 Garden of Wales so it begins we have 10 young Amorphophallus titanum kindly donated by Cam Botanic Garden - we are hoping that these will provide the first flowering of this Sumatran 🇮🇩 giant in Wales 🏴 in the coming years! 🪰

I was stopped in my 👣 by the sheer number of blooms on Aristolochia littoralis in the Tropical House 🏴 Gardd Cymru 🌿 Garden of Wales this tropical birthwort is from western and southern South America - it’s bizarre🪤 flowers attract 🪰 pollinators by mimicking carrion! Mmmm!

Wow! As I repotted a two year old plant of Thottea siliquosa 🏴 Gardd Cymru 🌿 Garden of Wales I noticed it was flowering, this is a member of #Aristolochiaceae from South Asia. The seed was kindly donated by TU Dresden - I can’t believe how fast it bloomed from seed!

Embreea rodigasiana a close relative of the genus Stanhopea in #Orchidaceae. We have waited and waited for the bud to pop 🏴 Gardd Cymru 🌿 Garden of Wales and it’s finally gone and dun’it! A stunning species from El Choco, #Colombia 🇨🇴, not sure of the scent yet, possibly a note of cut grass…
