In Worthless Checks? Clemency, Compassionate Release, and the Finality of Life Without Parole, Prof. Daniel Pascoe of CityU Hong Kong explores the mechanisms through which prisoners can gain clemency. He examines whether “life without parole” really means “life.” (1/2)

Prof. Pascoe finds that pardon, commutation, and compassionate release are too rare to be a check on excessive sentencing. He argues policy must address this: if life sentences remain common, then governments must broaden justifications for clemency. (2/2) scholarlycommons.law.northwestern.edu/cgi/viewconten…

A timely move by Biden, although I can't help thinking that by not commuting 3 federal death sentences he is giving Trump the green light to execute those prisoners. If you are going to oppose the death penalty in principle, you have to do it across all cases, no matter what.

reuters.com/world/asia-pac…. Amnesty, rather than clemency, is the right choice for Indonesia's political prisoners, and for those who perceive themselves as such. I have written about this previously: scholarhub.ui.ac.id/cgi/viewconten…
