AB 1121 would bring evidence-based early literacy policies to California classrooms to address the sobering fact that 6 in 10 children in our state are not reading on grade level by the end of third grade. Learn more by clicking the link below: CaliforniaKidsRead.org

Sold a Story has a new mini-series. We found a high-poverty school district where nearly every kid can read well. They’ve been teaching the same way for 25 years. But a new law, inspired by our reporting, put that at risk. All three episodes are out now.

Do you know about our documentary, “Our Dyslexic Children”? We made it because we wanted families to see that structured literacy was worth fighting for, and we wanted districts to understand that they were breaking federal law if they didn’t help dyslexic children.

It should not be this hard to give kids the type of reading instruction they need and deserve. “Berkeley schools to consider new literacy curriculum after lawsuit” berkeleyside.org/2025/03/28/ber…

Eight years after the class action lawsuit was filed, four years after the lawsuit was settled, Berkeley Unified commits to following science to teach children to read. It shouldn’t be this difficult! berkeleyside.org/2025/03/28/ber…

Steubenville spends less per-pupil than avg Ohio district, and 1/3 less than national avg. But Steubenville “consistently gets 95% to 99% of its 3rd graders over the proficiency bar” in ELA. ✅ Free, literacy-rich PreK starting at 3 ✅ Intensive phonics work ✅ Constant

It’s hard to understand why, despite science showing direct instruction is the most effective way to teach reading, we keep using other methods. Is it about teacher preference or fulfillment? It should be about what’s best for the kids. Decoding Dyslexia CA missy purcell

The biggest trick being played on the public is convincing us that our own children are incapable of learning to read. Gorrilas can learn sign language, cars drive themselves, and we're building a permanent space colony but our kids can't read bc of "Poverty + Trauma"? Stop it

The San Francisco Chronicle Editorial Board is over it. This whole editorial is 🔥, and the literacy portion is nuclear. “Nearly 60% of our 3rd graders didn’t meet state standards” for ELA. “Meanwhile, poverty-stricken red states such as Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama have surged

Many schools rely on an organization called EdReports when deciding which reading programs to purchase. But there's a problem with that.

Starting this fall, CA schools must administer an annual universal screener to all K–2 students to identify children at risk for #ReadingDifficulties. The state superintendent and Dept. of Ed released a list of approved screeners, but here are THREE things you may not know...
