Individualism is literally killing us. This “you do you” mentality, this “your health isn’t my responsibility,” this “just focus on yourself” attitude is literally killing us. This isn’t how society works. You can’t individualize yourself out of your need for community care.

This isn't a thread about the genocide in Gaza. It's a thread about a likely genocide somewhere else: Ethiopia. But please don't scroll on and ignore it. This story deserves amplification.

There was a war in Ethiopia's Tigray region from 2020 - 2022. It was one of the most egregiously under-reported conflicts in modern history. Yes, there was a comms blackout. Yes, access was difficult. But I think racism also played a part. Just another African war. Who cares?

A new report now says that the brutal sexual violence carried out against women and (often extremely young) girls by Ethiopian and Eritrean troops may amount to genocide. The evidence is horribly compelling.

[Trigger warning for extreme sexual violence]: After rapes, the soldiers often inserted things into women's vaginas, including metal screws and stones. In at least two cases, plastic-wrapped letters declaring intent to destroy Tigrayan women's ability to give birth were inserted

Survivors say soldiers openly said they wanted to wipe out the Tigrayan ethnicity by destroying reproductive organs or by raping the women so they would give birth to children of another ethnicity.

Payal Shah, co-author of the report, told the Guardian: “Having worked on gender-based violence for two decades … this is not something I have ever seen in other conflicts. It is a really horrific and extreme form of sexual violence, and one that deserves the world’s attention”
