Today marks the beginning of UK Disability History Month💥 For us, this is an opportunity to look back on our long struggle for autonomy, against paternalism and pity. How could we not start with the Disabled People's Direct Action Network (DAN)?

As someone who had a DNR without my consent during critical illness I know there are many pressures of coercion. It was expected a DNR was acceptable. Thankfully I was surrounded by loving friends who demanded it was removed. And here I am... #AssistUsToLive

Penny Pepper It was depressing AF to have to put together a dossier proving my "economic value" for my family in case I got seriously ill with COVID, as removing the non-consenual DNR applied simply b/c I'm on the learning disability register, took a long time.

I did a video🙈! But I'm so proud of this exhibition. As a researcher w/personal experience of disability & LTCs, I'm passionate about inclusive disability research. I hope that we can do a lot more The King's Fund in future. #InternationalDayofDisabledPeople #DisabilityRights

An absolutely fascinating thread. Definitely would hate some of this (community participation in diagnosis?!) but a window in a very different way to run healthcare

In other words, somebody claiming PIP (or the old DLA, which somehow I'm still personally on) can work full time and have savings and still claim. Indeed this is not a bad thing, in many cases, it's essential, the support that some disabled people get through PIP...3

Really important evidence being given by Fazilet Hadi here - the medical model of disability is extremely influential in health care and it's vital medics have an understanding of the social model too, to support and value disabled people's lives. #AssistedDying

This thread has comments from people who are desperate and suicidal at the news of the latest 'crackdown' on benefits. These kinds of changes are always much more harmful than helpful. It feels like 2010/11 again but worse, because things have already been cut to the bone.
