You all know that human beings share 99.9% of their DNA with every other human. But Did You Know? that you share 98.7% of your DNA with chimpanzees and bonobos, and 60% of your genes with fruit flies! Dartmouth Health | Inactive Greg Tsongalis Association for Molecular Pathology CAPathologists

Did you know? Rangifer tarandus, better known as reindeer (or caribou in North America), are ruminants; they are genetic cousins of cows and sheep, but as members of the Cervidae family their closest relations are deer. 🎀Greg Tsongalis Association for Molecular Pathology Dartmouth Health | Inactive

Did You Know? In 2008, DNA was sent into space on a memory device known as the Immortality Drive, which is stored at the International Space Station. It includes DNA from Stephen Hawking, Stephen Colbert, Lance Armstrong as well as several other notable humans.

Did You Know? The first case of submitted DNA evidence occurred in 1985 involving an immigration case in the UK. The first criminal case in the US to see DNA evidence occurred in 1987 where it was used to convict a criminal, Florida rapist Tommie Lee Andrews Association for Molecular Pathology Greg Tsongalis

Did You Know? Over the years, more than 500 deletions have occurred in our genome resulting in things like increasing the size of our brains and removing sensory whiskers from our faces!? Dartmouth Health | Inactive Greg Tsongalis Association for Molecular Pathology

We have seen comparisons of the human genome to other animal and plant species. But Did You Know...that we have 40-50% of identical DNA with cabbage!? Also check out this Dartmouth Health | Inactive post on Instagram highlighting the CGAT Lab's Covid-19 testing: instagram.com/p/CLH1a7uB-L_/

Did You Know? Our DNA is constantly being bombarded by agents that can cause mutation? Fortunately cells can often repair a genetic mutation before it becomes permanent; so the vast majority of mutations pose no health risks at all, unless you have a DNA repair deficient disorder

Friedrich Meischer first isolated the nucleic acid in 1859 from Pus-cells. It wasn’t til the 1900s when Rosalind Franklin perfected the X-ray crystallography that was critical for James D. Watson and Francis Crick to identify the double-helix structure of DNA. Women in science!

Did You Know? While Gregor Mendel is considered the father of genetics (remember all of those pea experiments), the term “molecular biology” often used as a catch-all to describe a wide breadth of interests was coined by Warren Weaver of the Rockefeller Foundation in 1938!
