"The world needs to cut global #emissions by 50% in 7 years’ time. At #COP27, we were still battling over whether we are phasing down / out #coal, and were not willing to talk about #fossilfuels. The mismatch could not be wider," says PIK's Johan Rockström. 👉pik-potsdam.de/en/news/latest…

My summary of #COP27. The process is important, but must go through a reform. There is nothing left to negotiate. COP must focus on delivery. It was quite painful to experience the 2. mismatch between the inertia in the negotiating rooms & the momentum in the open pavilion zones.

Current policies make it likely that #globalwarming will exceed 1.5°C during the 21st century & make it harder to limit warming below 2°C. “This Synthesis Report underscores the urgency of taking more ambitious action.” – Hoesung Lee, #IPCC Chair 👉 bit.ly/SRYRpt23

It has been an honour and a privilege to chair the panel performing KNMI scientific review this week. We enjoyed the openness of the discussions and really appreciated the quality of the science and outputs delivered by this great institute.

⬇️ It seems that this always needs to be repeated... - the IPCC couldn't be clearer on this point. No more oil, no more coal, no more gas: the solution to human-induced climate change is not that complex.

#Climatechange is affecting every region in the world This figure from #IPCC’s Synthesis Report shows the projected increase of the population exposed to coastal flooding events in the next decades that currently occurs on average once every 100 years. ➡️bit.ly/SRYRpt23

It is not climate science that scares the world. It is the inability of societies to solve the problem. Science shows 1.5°C is a global Safety limit. We must hold on to it, and rise to the challenge. Not fall into destructive fatalism and inertia Project Syndicate prosyn.org/uLVFXED

Extreme and prolonged hot and dry conditions in Canada are setting records and making it effortless for wildfires to rage. Canada was at the epicenter of the most significant heat anomaly on the planet in May.

Though, you do have to stomach some bad news... The Remaining Carbon Budget for 1.5°C has gone from 500 GtCO₂ to 250 GtCO₂ in three years: we emitted an extra 3*40=120 GtCO₂ & the science was updated... Oops...

Mangrove forests are coastal forests & critical habitats that act as nurseries & protect coasts from erosion. They are mainly found on coastlines in tropical and subtropical areas, & are unfortunately heavily threatened ecosystems. Learn more via National Geographic's infographic below 👇

🔥📈BREAKING NASA 📈🔥 The Earth Energy Imbalance from NASA satellite data broke through 1.8 W/m² (12-month mean)! This is faster than I expeced. More than many experts thought possible. I called this the most important graph in the world. A lot more heat is accumulating!

Yesterday's North Atlantic sea surface temperature anomaly is Code UFB! A record 1.50°C (4.45σ) above the 1991-2020 mean, the most over average of any day measured this year. And the running joke is getting old, but yes, I will probably have to extend the y-axis again tomorrow.
