Curious question for #academictwitter: I'm a journal editor, and I notice that on acceptance, less than half of our authors provide requested "plain-language summaries" for their manuscripts. I'd love to hear various reasons why - from the obvious to the nuanced. And ... go!

Many papers incorrectly report p-values. Statcheck is software that recomputes a paper's p-values to check for inconsistencies. When four major psych journals implemented it as part of the peer review process, the number of published inconsistencies declined and stabilized.

New paper out with Raimund Pils! We propose a new solution to the crises facing the social sciences: removing the discussion sections. We argue that they harm honest scientific reporting and would provide epistemic benefits if outsourced from the standard article. More below!

Advice Needed: I have a paper that's been under review for 7 months now, no word, listed as "under review" in Manuscript Central. Should I email the editor? Ask for update, offer to suggest reviewers? Do nothing?

Interesting initiative at JCR to help fund data collection for underfunded scholars with promising but incomplete papers. I'm very curious what kind of take-up there will be. In the meantime, spread the word... consumerresearcher.com/jcr-inclusion-…

We're excited to announce a new collaboration with Time-sharing Experiments for the Social Sciences! If you get a proposal accepted at TESS we will consider it for in-principle acceptance at JEPS. Full details linked here, but here's how it works... cambridge.org/core/journals/…

Submitted a critical commentary, both reviewers were authors of the target article. Any guesses at what happened next? Rejected, of course. Editors: DO NOT do this. There needs to be at least one independent reviewer.

Question, been asked in RPg/PhD seminar: Do you know any scholars that do confirmatory quantitative research who have shifted all/most of their work to Registered Reports? Who? If not - why do you think that is? (especially tenured/senior people who support open-science)

Collabra is looking for new editors! Specifically senior editors in cognitive and personality psych, and a new EiC (I’m done in December!) If you’re at all interested, please consider applying - don’t assume you’re not qualified enough!

Do you have thoughts about how open peer review (publishing content of peer reviews, and/or identifying reviewers) might affect trust or diversity in science/scholarship? We’d like to hear your thoughts! Google form: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAI… More info: trianglesci.org/2023/07/24/inv…

Dear Editors, If you find a reviewer leaving comments like this, send them a private email telling them that if they cannot be professional in reviews, they are not welcome to submit manuscripts in the future.

Thanks to everyone who supported my bid. I was unsuccessful but that’s BRILLIANT news because Association for Psychological Science chose someone better: the inestimable simine vazire! Simine is an amazing scientist, editor & reformer and will have a huge impact on the journal and APS more broadly 🎉🍾
