The phrase "Man the Hunter" is often taken to mean "men hunt women gather". But the 1966 "Man the Hunter" conference was about so much more, and revolutionised public understanding and perception of forager societies. We hope this new paper brings context and clarity.

I do so miss the old twitter algorithm. Perfect balance of utility and engagement. X is deep-fried and bluesky lacks that je ne sais quois.

I don't think empricial work without theory is useless & my tool taphonomy paper would've been impossible if some Japanese anths hadn't thought toolkits intrinsically interesting. But this stuff'll be about as useful to future scholars as whig/peelite psychological differences

Are dancing and infant-directed song (incl. lullabies) human universals? Like many people, I've long thought so. But in a new paper in Current Biology, Kim Hill & I report that the Northern Aché (Paraguay) lacked both behaviors, likely losing them during cultural declines.

The evolutionary social sciences are relatively interdisciplinary but I think we’d benefit a lot from more collaboration with historians and sociologists. A lot of our models would benefit from being stress tested by skeptics and specialists in those fields.

We are part of a toolmaking and tool using family of primates. Many of our ancestors and relatives translated those abilities to the durable materials of stone and bone, starting more than 3 million years ago. Which species made them? Probably all. johnhawks.net/p/all-the-homi…

My stance on pilot mental health: it’s important for pilots to have a decent life waiting for them on the ground so that they have a reason to land. But they can’t be so attached to the ground that they lose their desire to take off
