Imagine 1000’s of bison over the millennia rubbing their pelts off using this rubbing stone. Their sharp hooves pulverized the soil making the deep furrow around it. Flaxcombe, SK. Find out more in Wildlife, Landscapes, and Geology: An Alberta and Saskatchewan Touring Guide.

The old Hudson’s Bay store in Fort Qu’Appelle, built in 1897, is quite the class act of a building. Imagine hauling and splitting those glacier-carried boulders. brokenpoplars.ca

I always want to know who carried, split and put up these glacial field stones. St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, Fort Qu’Appelle, SK, built in 1885. There is so much early western Canadian history in this small town. brokenpoplars.ca

The St. Victor Petroglyphs in south Saskatchewan are a pretty ethereal and special place. Overlooking a broad glacial meltwater channel, the ridge must have had special meaning to the etchers of the petroglyphs. brokenpoplars.ca

Partaking in the Alberta Wilderness Association Cypress Hills Bioblitz. A bit of smoke; a bit of wind. I don’t identify flowers. I do appreciate them though. brokenpoplars.ca

Big Hill Springs Provincial Park is a treat close to Calgary. Flowing from bedrock with a mean annual temperature of 6 degrees C, the springs never freeze. And ... tufa coats everything. It is a great place for a picnic and for kids. brokenpoplars.ca

Here are Milky Way scenes from Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park (Aisinai'pi), Alberta, on May 24 and 25 under very clear skies. The Milky Way is over the Milk River, and the Sweetgrass Hills in Montana. Tech details are in the Alt Text. TWAN Alberta Parks

Another of my favourite places is Red Rock Coulee in southern AB. The experience is ethereal. Giant red “boulders” are concretions that formed just below the sea floor of the Bearpaw Sea ~75 million years ago. More info and where in “Scenic Geology of Alberta: A Roadside Touring

If you ever doubt your place in the universe, remember this: 11 million of your names are on Mars with me. They’re permanently etched into a microchip on my deck. It’s a quiet reminder that exploration is a team effort.
