The strain of being the family breadwinner for #Filipino migrant workers increased during the #pandemic. Before, Celso worked 40 hours/week as a baker, now only works 12 hours/week. His employer cut his hours and benefits when the pandemic began. #AAPIHeritageMonth 1/2

It is #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth! Over the next couple of days Damayan will share how marginalization and exploitation negatively affects the mental health of #migrant domestic #workers and what changes must be made to improve mental health.

Domestic workers are not covered by the most significant federal employment & labor protections. As a result, too many employers take advantage by not following a written agreement, invading privacy and verbally/psychologically abusing workers. #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth

Without being protected by significant federal employment and labor protection, too many employers confiscate #domesticworkers identity documents and restrict private communication. These abuses increase the risk for #depression and #anxiety. #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth

Domestic workers are excluded from the most significant federal employment and labor protections. As a result, too many employers force long hours on domestic workers which has been associated with poor mental health status. #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth
