Check out our new paper that brings us another step closer to understanding how the amazing IL-17A–secreting γδ T cells develop. A big thanks to Stefania Martin and Daniel J Pennington for their help and support, always. stke.sciencemag.org/content/14/692…

As summarized yesterday, Omicron 80% less likely to cause hospitalizations for COVID-19. Problem with a highly transmissible variant if you swab everyone's noses in hospital (which we do) is need to distinguish between being there WITH vs FOR COVID bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Real-world data on Omicron from UK similar to data from S. Africa on Omicron being 60% less likely to result in hospitalizations than Delta (in S. Africa, 70% less likely compared to delta; 80% lower risk of hospitalization than previous COVID waves) washingtonpost.com/world/europe/o…

Why so excited Paxlovid/molnupiravir? Updated data from CDC today shows rate of hospitalization among unvax'd 67.8/100K & rate among vax'd 3.9/100K (typical flu hospitalization rate 20-40/100K). We now have way to prevent hosp in unvax'd covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tra…

I’ve seen a lot of Covid in the ER recently. With so many people getting infected recently, some folks may wonder what’s the point of getting vaccinated at all? And is there really any value to a booster dose if I’ve had two Pfizer/Moderna or a shot of J&J? My observations: 🧵

How's NHS doing at moment in relation to omicron and other pressures? New thread based on latest data. Note that we prefer to use numbers of covid-19 patients in hospital, rather than new admissions, as two days more up to date and better represents whole picture...1/19

So far we've seen reduction in Omicron clinical severity vs Delta, reflecting both immunity wall and instrinsic virus properties, in 2 different populations: Gauteng, South Africa 73% papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf… UK 60-70% assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/upl…

Some thoughts from seeing a ton of Covid in the ER this week Good news: Aside from a few patients with compromised immune systems, didn't have to hospitalize anyone who was vaxxed/boosted Bad news: Health systems are stressed to the max We need to adapt...quickly Thread👇

How do hospital admissions of children from #COVID19 in England compare to other infections ? All admissions testing positive for #COVID19 in <18yrs after nearly 2yrs of pandemic: 15,273 Mean annual admissions for Viral wheeze: 77,488 Bronchiolitis: 51,655 Otitis media: 33,000

All this "with Covid" and not "of Covid" talk is nonsense. You won't hear doctors who actually see patients say: "it's just with Covid, no big deal." We know what's going on. We are in the hospitals.

The fact that England managed to restrain from imposing restrictions over Christmas against the advice of activist scientists and the Labour Party, was a decision of global consequence:

No evidence that infection pre-Omicron variants interferes with immunity to Omicron. On the contrary, immunity is better with more infections. Just like one would expect. Immune Imprinting and Protection against Repeat Reinfection with SARS-CoV-2 | NEJM nejm.org/doi/full/10.10…
