Grad Students: Networking is critical for success in academia. But the real question is WHO to network with. I’ve known grad students who will spend time at conferences drinking beers in the bars with grad students from unranked programs. Is that 1/

who you want to network with? Answer is: absolutely not. You want to identify the highest ranking member(s) of every department you’d like to be at, find them, and talk them up. If they drink, get the tab or at least your drinks. It shows you’re not just milking your 2/

“grad student” status for complimentary goodies. Because let’s be honest… many “poor” grad students come from wealthy, landed families. Professors know this. So they’re not impressed with the moral economy of the oppressed grad student. If you can stand up on your own two 3/

feet and pay your own way, then you will be respected and remembered as such. More importantly, establish yourself and your credentials. See who they’ve recently hired and make a case that you’re of the same stature or even surpass them in their scholarly abilities. It’s bold, 4/

yes, but it will raise the eyebrow and demonstrate your self-confidence. Full Profs are old school. They don’t like little games where you play humble or what have you. They want to know that YOU know your worth. Because if you don’t, then why should anyone else? Before you 5/

leave make sure you find out their top three scholarly influences. If you haven’t read them, do so ASAP. Thereafter send them a message and ask if you can video chat with them about one of their works. This will open the door to deep scholarly discussion and hopefully lifelong 6/

friendship. It will also help you edge out other candidates and, in the least, gain you an ally who can put in “a good word” with other departments. TL;DR — Avoid other grad students, pay your way, don’t just “network” but develop a friendship.
