Nominating Conventions are a form of political theater. Almost never surprising in content, but potentially awesome in form. They're successful if they inspire enthusiasm. And this DNC has been really good.

Prejudice is often rooted in misperceptions: that the outgroup are lazy, unpatriotic, etc. Our new field experiment asks: to reduce misperceptions, is it better to become close with one outgroup member (deep contact), or to have brief encounters with many (broad contact)?

With racist political rhetoric making headlines, I wanted to recap findings from Trump's 2015-20 ascendance & first term. Racial rhetoric can simultaneously 1) activate prejudice among some & 2) reduce prejudice overall. 1) link.springer.com/article/10.100… 2) academic.oup.com/poq/article/84…

New paper out in Comparative Political Studies journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/00… Can attitudes safeguard liberal democracy? Only if they are sincere, I argue. If they aren't, illiberal politicians may realize that some citizens are "staged democrats" & have an incentive to become more exclusionary. 1/9

With Trump's win and the Scholz government falling, there may be additional political ripples to watch out for, but I'm guessing the biggest loser is Ukraine and the Eastern flank. There are still resources to fight, but the pressure to make any peace will start adding up soon.
