Irish-born Canadian soldier Pte James Wilson was shot for desertion at 4.20am on this day in 1916. Before emigrating to Canada, he’d served nine years in the Connaught Rangers. During his WW1, service he had a number of charges against him. 📍Poperinghe New Military Cemetery 🇧🇪

It’s unusual to see infilled letters on a CWGC headstone. Perhaps it was done by a family member or a well-meaning member of the public. The story behind the headstone is tragic, as George Conway took his own life just three days after joining the army. 📍Bedworth Cemetery 🇬🇧

The shrapnel-damaged equipment belonging to Second Lieutenant William Cousins on display at Passchendaele Museum. William was severely wounded on 15th July 1917 at Zonnebeke and, by the look of his kit, was lucky to survive. 📍Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917 🇧🇪

Private Walter Woodall, Yorkshire Hussars (Alexandra, Princess of Wales Own), was taken ill on a Sunday night; by the following night he had passed away. His remains were conveyed from Bridlington to Scarborough, where his parents lived. 📍Scarborough (Manor Road) Cemetery 🇬🇧

Captain Robert Wade-Gery, Royal Garrison Artillery, was killed while observing the fire of his battery. He had joined the army in 1903, arrived in France in October 1914, and was awarded an MC in 1916. He also played rugby for the army. 📍Norfolk Cemetery, Becordel-Becourt🇫🇷
