We are excited to announce that the annual 57th #PopGroup meeting is taking place from 08 - 10 January 2024 and will be hosted by the University of St Andrews. 🗓️ Registration is already open and can be found at populationgeneticsgroup.org.uk Looking forward to seeing you all there!

With Hannah Gellert, Sam Church, Anton Suvorov, Dmitri Petrov and others, we use low-input (down to 30ng), single-insect Oxford Nanopore sequencing to help do 184 new genomes and address the near absence of genomic data for drosophilid species that cannot be cultured in the lab.

Oxford Nanopore We are continuing our sequencing with the goal of hitting 1,000 drosophilid genomes by the end of next year. Please reach out if you are interested in collaborating on genomes: no cost to you and the only stipulation is open data.

If you can catch a drosophilid, Bernard Kim will sequence it!

I always assumed that the P-element was the latest invader in D.mel. -> I was wrong, there is Spoink; many thanks to Dr. Sarah Signor Riccardo Pianezza Almorò for super fun collaboration :) biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Fantastic opportunity for African undergraduate students to undertake a fully funded internship in genomics at Wellcome Sanger Institute . University of The Gambia & UTG Science Students’ Association

Paper from my PhD with Darren Obbard is bluesky, describing our experiment looking at the fitness costs of non-isolated Drosophila viruses, is now out in Proc. B - doi.org/10.1098/rspb.2…. 5 viruses associated with reduced lifespan in Dmel females, and 3 with total no. of adult offspring

Extremely happy and honored to have been awarded an ERC Advanced Grant European Research Council (ERC). Many thanks to lab members for brainstorms, discussions and their patience, and especially @miesenp @RebeccaHaaaa ezgitaskopru for help drafting the proposal. radboudumc.nl/en/news-items/…
