"Leading is not about having all the answers; it is about modeling what you expect and inspiring and nurturing those around you to step into the leadership role when their skill sets, and expertise, can serve the needs of the organization." Michel & Dawn Brookhart, in press

Didau (2020), “We are predisposed to seek out only that which confirms what we already believe and to ignore that which contradicts these beliefs. If we find evidence that confirms what we already believe - and we usually can - we will probably accept it as true” (p. 19).

SO appreciate Dawn Brookhart's honesty when speaking about her experience and role in a supervisory role during today's Institute for Multi-Sensory Education presentation. Does anyone else deal w/multiple "changes" each year that are scheduled/communicated/monitored via a top-down approach? Rarely works!

As a supervisor, one must be able to operationalize what they do. Are their theories in use aligned with their espoused theory? Do their actions/behaviors communicate what they expect? Do they model what's expected in classrooms - not just monitor? #IMSE Dawn Brookhart

How can you do anything well when trying to do too many things at once? Great question, Dawn Brookhart! And I bet there are many #teachers who ask this same question. #IMSE #schooldistrict #superintendent #principal #systems #focusedpriority

Professional Development and Learning (PDL) - What is your plan for next year? Will PDL be aligned throughout your system, across departments, etc.? Will those delivering the content throughout the system be consistent and will aligned follow-up be provided? #IMSE Dawn Brookhart

"Success breeds success, but it doesn't happen overnight. There needs to be time for learning, training, instruction, and practice." Dawn Brookhart during today's #IMSE presentation.

"When programs implemented with fidelity are compared to programs not implemented with fidelity, the difference in effectiveness is profound. Those implemented with fidelity yield average effect sizes that are two to three times higher" (Durlak & DuPre, '08). Requires >1 PD day!

What I learned last week after completing 51 1-to-1 coaching conversations w/NM Structured Literacy Coaches: ask more questions, listen, learn about your colleagues’ needs, ground decisions in student data, build capacity in others. Don’t try to be a fixer; it’s not about you!

If I were to redo my dissertation study, I’d want to learn more about the inner-workings of a central office. For example, how, if at all, are district departments aligned to support student need? Or how, if at all, do district supervisors model what they expect of teachers?

Back in the Bethel SD in OR to provide guidance on developing cross-curricular units using district-adopted curricula to include writing prompts and demonstrated mastery projects. This work will lead to future opportunities for #lessonstudy. #Studentfocusedcoaching #beachange

“Position principals as the primary lever of change. Many central offices try to improve student learning without including principals in these efforts…. Principals know things about their schools and students that the central office might not know.” No one size fits all!

If I was a central office employee in a school district, how would I know if my work made any difference? That is, what evidence would I (e.g., specialist, assistant supt., exec. dir.) collect to demonstrate that I had any impact on increasing student achievement?

The Anxious Generation book - wow!! The findings have me asking myself so many questions. This might be an insightful book study for schools/districts. How much time are students required to use technology?
