The theme for day #29 of #31DaysOfGraves is 'Old' and you don't get much older than the stones in the Judische Friedhof in Worms. The 'Heiliger Sand' is home to hundreds of stones from the 13th and 14th century - some even earlier. The oldest is believed to date from 1076/77.

I guess it was just a matter of time but I've just discovered that a client's ancestral home is now occupied by a branch of McDonalds... 🫤

Good to see @DeborahSuggRyan on Episode 2 of A House Through Time. Another outstanding piece of television looking at the Second World War through the lives and experiences of ordinary people. Once more, the research was magnificent. This is what television was made for.

For day #30 of #31DaysOfGraves there's some fine #Scrollwork on this stone in the churchyard of St Bartholomew, Longnor, Staffordshire: DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF MARY LOMAS WIFE OF THOMAS LOMAS OF LONGNOR I'll also put this out there as my contribution to #OnePlaceWednesday

It never ceases to amaze me how quickly the resolve to "just get on with writing the report, after all, the client's budget has long since been used up" evaporates following the discovery of a series of C18th Churchwarden's account books freely available online via FamilySearch

It's the final day of #31DaysOfGraves and the theme is 'Skull'. I'll put forward this stone from Abercorn Kirkyard in West Lothian featuring not one, not two, but three skulls... #Halloween2024

At ⁦The National Archives⁩ today looking at one of my favourite record series. But what is it? Clue: Dickens wrote about the institution that created these records as exhausting ‘finances, patience, courage [and] hope…’

My wife's PE teacher at secondary school used to tell the girls in her care to hold their heads up and say, 'Look at me, aren't I a prize?' Well, it seems that I should now be saying that myself... 😊 🏆 🎖️

I don’t know how many people I’ve traced over the years who had a connection with Fleet Street and the parish church of St Bride’s but it always seems to crop up in my research. But before today I’d never been inside the church. To describe it as stunning is an understatement…😍

I'm researching a family called Macey who owned a number of the Aits or Eyots (river islands) in the Thames. I've just found this reference in a will from 1802 to several of them being 'in the occupation of Mrs Garrick', i.e. Eva Marie Garrick, the widow of the famous actor.

It makes a nice change to be able to write the following sentence in a client's report: "John and Eliza were evidently living a comfortable life." I seem to spend most of my research time at the opposite end of the social scale...
