A 40000 mile bread line. The Census Bureau says 30 million Americans did not have enough to eat in the week ending July 21. Standing in a socially-distanced line six feet apart and one extra foot for the width of a person, 30 million people is a bread line 39,772 miles long.

We’re airing a piece today Marketplace about why supply just can’t meet demand for bikes now. Instead, maybe fix a junker in the meantime? Pliers, Allen wrench, naval jelly, & grease. My talent to make ends meet if society crumbles: bike repair. Curious, what's yours?

As a break from the news, I need advice on a marketplace supply/demand problem: How are you figuring out how much candy to buy for trick or treaters this year? None? A ton because the kiddies have been cooped up? Economists? Supply chain experts? Anyone?

Stock market “predicts” Biden win. When S&P 500 rises August-October incumbent party wins the White House. Analyst Sam Stovall says this worked every year except Eisenhower 1956. Start of August S&P: 3,271.12. Close today: 3,269.96. Therefore Biden wins by one teensy point.

Come the hour, we Americans can deploy soaring rhetoric. White House advisors and outside associates reportedly unimpressed with impeachment. As one put it, “Whoop-de-do.” wapo.st/3szENj4

Fry's Electronics out West abruptly went bust this week. The place meant a lot to me. Looking for Fry's super fans who might reminisce briefly with us for a feature we're doing.

Do you miss some feature of the American landscape that's disappeared in the last ten year in this era of e-commerce? Thinking of it with old pal Fry's Electronics vanishing this week. I'm looking to feature some of your stories, so tweet 'em this way. (Photo: Getty Images).

Gary Leib, the cartoonist, animator, and musician known for Idiotland, American Splendor, and his involvement in bands Rubber Rodeo and, most recently, SUSS, has passed away suddenly. We're deeply sorrowful to share this news. Our hearts go out to SUSS and Gary's friends/family.

Sorry to talk money but that’s what I do for a living. I work for a non-profit news organization. The nice folks on our Marketplace advisory board say that today, Tuesday, they’ll match dollar-for-dollar anything you (also nice) can send our way. support.marketplace.org/mkp-twitter

A fall obsession: How power players shape the big news stories that shape our lives. Anchorman Dave becomes Professor Dave some afternoons for "Journalism & Society: Covering Power." Hey City College of NY: no pre-reqs & *not a ton of writing: MCA 31146. Maybe a someday podcast?

Very sad to see the great Paul Farmer has died. I had the privilege of spending time with him while reporting several public health stories including one of his projects in Rwanda. nytimes.com/2022/02/21/obi…
