Quiz for today: Which patients have a non-recurrent right laryngeal nerve? Those that have an abnormal take off of the right subclavian artery (off the descending aorta and passing posterior to the esophagus).

It is NOT shameful to perforate the gallbladder, but it should NOT happen often. Be careful!! #bettersurgeonsinlesstime #Surgtweeting

Mayo Clinic General Surgery (MAYO CLINIC SCIENTIFIC PRESS SERIES) by Jad M. A... amazon.com/dp/0190650508/… via Amazon After a decade of effort, our surgical textbook for residents and medical students is reality! I hope they find the surgical videos and succinct text useful. :-)

Anders Ericsson (1947-2020) found that masterful performance comes when driven people use deliberate practice & receive voluminous feedback. If I could sum that up in 1 word....I would say "EFFORT". Show me a trainee willing to put forth effort, and I will show you a winner.😉

Mayo Clinic Surgery training in 1915: 365 days of EFFORT without 1 vacation day. 8 interns helping to care for 10,000+ patients/year operated upon by 6-7 staff surgeons. Living in St. Mary's Hospital attic. Paid $50/mo. but room & board fees >$30/mo. EFFORT + FEEDBACK = Success!

Benign Cavernous Hemangioma. Asymptomatic for 6 years. The patient develops early satiety and abdominal distention and fullness. R hepatectomy was straightforward. Early control of R portal vein and R hepatic artery necessary and made procedure safe and nearly blood less.

Deliberate practice, feedback, and drive are three keys to becoming a MASTERFUL performer. As young surgeons, we all need repetitions to improve, but do NOT underestimate the need for feedback. Seek it out. Get critiqued. Here's proof that it works: authors.elsevier.com/a/1Wj8A90L~bxPh

Matched medical students in surgery: CONGRATULATIONS! You are embarking on an epic journey. Several bits of advice: 1. When in doubt, ASK! 2. Learn what pronation and supination mean. 3. Tie square and slip knots well. 4. You ARE good enough to do this. 5. ASK!

Check out the efforts to teach 5th graders the FAST exam, high schoolers MIS skills, undergrads colonoscopy, and medical students anastomoses. Find out the # of repetitions it takes to be able to consider doing a face transplant. facs.org/education/accr… #SEW2018
