In 1908, Cheyenne Frontier Days in Wyoming was basically the superbowl of rodeos, which is why everyone was shocked when the winner that year turned out to be Ikua Purdy, a Paniolo. What's a Paniolo? A Hawaiian cowboy...

Ennio Morricone's theme for A Fistful of Dollars was based on the arrangement he had recently done of Woody Guthrie's Pastures of Plenty for American folk singer Peter Tevis. Listen to Guthrie's original, Tevis' cover & the film's title theme "Titoli" 👇

Western star Broncho Billy Anderson directed the first known instance of the pie-in-the-face gag in his 1909 Comedy short Mr. Flip. In it, Mr. Flip goes around obnoxiously hitting on women until they retaliate, including one who hits him in the face with a pie

If you own a region free Blu-ray player & were rightly disappointed in Criterion's Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid set from last year, I highly recommend Peckinpah's West, a German boxset released by Plaion. Unlike the Criterion set, this has both Preview Cuts & they're remastered*

Not only did Criterion leave off the best cut of Pat Garrett (the 1st Preview), it left the 2nd Preview looking like shit, therefore prioritizing the two illegitimate cuts (the mangled Theatrical & Paul Seydor's fan edit), which both got 4K restorations...

Billy Baldwin was initially cast as Doc Holliday in Tombstone (1993), but Val Kilmer replaced him less than a week later. Kevin Jarre, screenwriter & original director of Tombstone, wanted Willem Dafoe as Doc, but Disney wouldn't cast him because of The Last Temptation of Christ

John Ford was a huge fan of F.W. Murnau's Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans, which starred George O'Brien & Janet Gaynor, two Ford alumni. He went on record calling it "the greatest picture that has been produced"

Happy Birthday to James Hancock! Like Marlene Dietrich felt after chats with Orson Welles, I always feel like a plant that’s been watered when I spend time with you! I love that our epic friendship even has its own song now written by Complayment d'Objet!

Iddy 1956's The Proud Ones has a couple of (relatively) juicy blood squibs & while it certainly wasn't the first, the bloody wounds at the climax feel like something from a film made a decade later

Springfield Rifle (1952) doesn’t get its due. Cooper’s as cool as ever and Andre De Toth keeps it moving like a rocket. The Blu-Ray looks good and the extras are terrific. Warner Classics

Richard Dix as the Wyatt surrogate teams up with Preston Foster's Doc Holliday stand-in to face down Johnny Behan proxy Louis Calhern on the streets of squint-and-you-see Tombstone "Silver City" in 1935's THE ARIZONIAN.

Four André De Toth westerns starring Randolph Scott: - Carson City - Thunder Over the Plains - Riding Shotgun - The Bounty Hunter I haven't seen these but I had them on my drive and they're difficult to find in decent quality so why not share them. Link: gofile.io/d/FxXevl
