Very mcuh a point to remember: digitisation is great as a way of increasing access to things, but it really doesn't "preserve" them, what it does is create a second, really fragile copy which you have to work to preserve in its turn.

Data from ~38,000 British soldiers from 1755-1758 yields an average age of ~28. A just little younger than Christopher Duffy's "well-set up man in his early thirties." Compare that to: US soldier in WW2 was 26. Vietnam it was 19-23. Today in the US it is ~27.
