Awake and alert and mobile patients know to stay on their feet and leave the ET tube alone. We talk to them. We let them dance to their favorite music, we let them visit with family & they understand. WesElyMD Kali Dayton SCCM American Thoracic Society (ATS)

Communication is a basic human right
YET we strip people of this right all the time in the ICU by overuse of sedation. Wake them up & it eases the stress & burden of critical illness on patients & families plus clinicians Listen to Kali Dayton teach - apple.co/37TJYEP

6/ Why I believe it is fair for him to be mad at doctors is that we definitely cause iatrogenic harm to patients like Sarah Beth (pic w perm) in the ICU by overuse of sedation & mobilization, absence of family, and general lack of adherence to proven #A2Fbundle safety steps.

Genuine out of bed mobilization early for fully awake mechanically ventilated patients is NOT harmful & this study tells us we continue to try having it both ways- sedating people & mobilizing. Sedation is culprit in NEJM. Kali Dayton Mikita

Come on. ✔ “Rest is best” (which in this context means “leave folks sedated in bed”) is a very dangerous poem to echo. #PICS #A2Fbundle

Talia Pollok DPT, CCS #APTACSM APTA Acute Care Kali Dayton My personal take away (after careful attention to the Supplement and the Protocol), is it shows we are all still doing this wrong- we are both sedating & mobilizing. We strive for bed level & not walking #icurehab.

As a nurse, I was culturally trained to respond to this emergence agitation with sedation. This locks and loads patients into the cycle of sedation and delirium. How many lives could be saved by communicating with patients when coming out of induction meds after intubation?

yiehl Being with you here in #Singapore at this Critical Care meeting #Apics2023 is edifying for me. Seeing how devoted you are to re-implementing the “awake and walking“ ICU experience for our patients. You inspire me yiehl to become a better physician. #A2Fbundle #EDDB
