Dayton is on pace to record more than 500 OVI arrests in 2025—a level we have only reached four times in the past 15 years. From January 1 through September 15, 2025, officers have already made 368 OVI arrests. There have been two consecutive year of increases.

In addition to an overall increase in impaired driving (OVI) arrests, our officers are seeing a troubling rise in cases where drivers are under the influence with children in the vehicle or while in possession of a firearm.

We Remember Det. Sgt. Lucius Rice. Detective Sergeant Lucius Rice was shot while trying to arrest a murder suspect at an apartment on College St. The suspect was hiding in a closet and came out firing a gun. Sgt. Rice died from his injuries 5 days later. End of Watch 10/5/1939

Around 3:50 a.m. on Oct. 10, Officer Espino was first on scene to a fire assist call. After learning someone was still inside, he forced entry to help the woman escape. She suffered smoke inhalation but made it out safely. youtu.be/_Cb7upTKtAI

The traffic lights are currently out at Third Street and Keowee Street. Temporary stop signs are in place at the intersection. Drivers are encouraged to treat the intersection as a four-way stop and use alternate routes if possible.
