Racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparities are ubiquitous. However, disparities shouldn't exist within a clinical trial providing participants with education, access to care, and even healthy food, right? Read on to see what we Deborah Wexler found in the Look AHEAD study!

In conclusion, a clinical trial should theoretically provide similar care to all participants, smoothing participant differences due to underlying health literacy, insurance and access to care, and provider implicit bias.

Our study shows that even extensive education and provision of needs like food did not overcome racial/ethnic disparities in care. Ongoing research on the impacts of interpersonal and structural racism and environmental justice may help elucidate reasons behind these disparities.
